Hitchhiking is the best way to travel when you’re young and don’t have a very large budget. But hitchhiking is more than just getting from A to B. You get to know interesting people and share stories with them. The organisation ‘Viva Con Agua’ rewards the adventure of hitchhiking with clean drinking water for people in need.
„Hitching a lift“ – that’s what they call hitchhiking in Ireland. Hitchhiking is something I have done many, many times in my home country, even before I thought about getting a driver’s license and even before I had the necessary money for a trip by bus or train.
So I found myself often standing on the side of the road with my thumb in the air, hoping the weather wouldn’t let me down. In fact, hitchhiking was actually my favourite means of getting around. I was intrigued by the thrill of whether someone would take me with them and, of course, where I wanted to go.
One time, I stood on the side of a road in a remote village hoping to be taken to the city of Cork to meet a friend, but this time no one would take me with them. After my friend waited for hours in a bar for me, I called him up in the pub and said that we should both try to hitchhike so far that we would meet in the middle.
It took me hours to get from one side of the village to the other. Then I suddenly saw my friend’s face in the passenger seat of an oncoming car! He had won the race and so we agreed to meet in the local pub to celebrate his victory and mourn my bad luck.
The drinking water aid organisation „Viva Con Agua“ has turned the hitchhiking adventure into a competition for a good cause. Through hitchhiking it collects donations for the drinking water supply of people in need. I know the necessity of this valuable work through my own Project Clearwater and I was eager to support this idea.
The „Viva con Agua“ tram race has been taking place annually since 2008. Teams of two or three from different cities come together throughout Europe and hitchhike to a specific destination. Whoever gets there fastest wins the competition. But there is more to it than just that. It’s also about meeting a wide variety of people with open eyes and ears, exchanging ideas with them and creating new experiences with them.
There are many meeting points along the route, mostly in larger cities, where all the teams come together for one night. The team that reached all the daily goals the fastest was the winner. You can see how much fun the participants had on the last adventures on the website of the competition. There you can also apply to participate.
The 2017 tram race already took place with an amazing 116 participants. The tour started in Germany with Lithuania as the destination. There are so many great people out there in this world, doing amazing things. Take the time to meet them and, perhaps, to join them.
God Bless,
Rea
