‘BeWooden’ and ‘wijld’ are companies who are breaking down old norms, taking new and different routes and rethinking and reinterpreting things. And they are doing all that with wood. Already a few years ago, the two labels realized that in the current time of short lived trend products, people’s need for extraordinary, high quality products is growing.
YOUNG, DYNAMIC, YET AWARE OF TRADITION
Bewooden started out as a counter movement to fast fashion and rekindled the appeal of traditional craftsmanship. This resulted in more than 25 articles made of wood, created with patience, diligence and attentiveness and born out of an up cycling process. Sustainability and the love for nature as well as for its resources play an immense role for the company from Bad Vilbel in Hesse. These high quality unique pieces are obtained in the best possible way from excess materials of furniture production and only cooperate with companies that exclusively process local timber. Each item is handmade locally, shipped with wood fibres instead of plastic packing materials and comes with a lifetime warranty.

WHILE THERE IS ALREADY A LOT OF FAST
FASHION IN THE WORLD, WE WANT TO BE
A SLOW FASHION BRAND THAT USES
TRADITIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP.

HENDRIK ROTH VON BEWOODEN

Elegant cufflinks, solid cardholders or tie clips made of wood and stainless steel; it’s with these accessories that the wearer confidently and stylishly diverges from current standards. The wooden bow ties are a special highlight. Due to their grain, each individual piece is completely unique. The Valiant Little Tailor from the Grimm’s fairytale managed to get “seven flies with one blow”, but even he could never have dreamt of a fly made of wood. And if you prefer even more individuality, you can use the configurator to create a fly of your own design. Creative women don’t miss out at BeWooden either; there is jewellery with real silver and wood trimmings, wooden pocket mirrors, pendants and brooches with the bonus being the company donates one euro to dogs in need with every dog brooch sold within Germany until 01.03.2019. Find out more here.

Hello, wood: Craftsmanship and unique design are the principles at the top of BeWooden’s list of priorities. Whether purses, belts, flies or jewellery, all of their products are lovingly handcrafted in a Bohemian family carpenter’s workshop from excess wood that accumulates during the production of various pieces of furniture. WIJLD – COOL SHIRTS MADE OF WOOD
Aline, Timo and Angelo founded the company wijld to demonstrate to society that clothing can be both fair and sustainable, and on top of that can also be made out of wood. What at first sounds a bit paradoxical, turns out to be a pretty brilliant idea when you start taking a closer look. Wooden shirts are actually quite convincing for several reasons: they are silky and soft, more durable than cotton and more environmentally friendly due to being manufactured without any chemicals at all in form of fertilisers or pesticides. Even the water consumption is lower than with a conventional shirt production made of polyester etc. In addition, their antibacterial effect makes them perfect for allergy sufferers and their temperature balancing properties make them ideal as functional shirts for athletes. Additionally, they are vegan, as the entire production chain is free of animal products and has even been certified by PETA.

Per WoodShirt 150ml of chemicals,
600g CO2 and 1000l water are saved.
This corresponds to more than 8 bathtubs
or 120 water boxes.

But what exactly is meant when speaking of fair and sustainable clothing? Fair specifically means that nobody is exploited along the production chain, not nature, nor farmers, forest rangers, tailors or the wearers of a WoodShirt. Clothing is sustainable because it is made from a raw material from our regions and therefore no excessively long transport routes are necessary. Additionally, wijld exclusively uses wood from certified sustainable cultivation, which means when a tree is felled, it is converted into WoodShirts (four T-shirts are obtained from a log of approx. 1 kg) and a new tree is planted. This reforestation project has been underway since 2014, and an incredible 14,208,749,006 trees have already been planted.

But how is soft yarn actually made out of wood?
• Wood is processed into chips and mixed with an organic solvent.
• The honey-like mass is pressed through spinnerets.
• The fine fibres are then bleached, cleaned, dried and processed into yarn.
So whether it be BeWooden (nominated for the German Design Award 2019) or wijld (winner of the German Sustainability Award for Start-Ups 2018), one thing is clear: these companies are definitely on the right track.
