PININFARINA sounds incredibly poetic. It reminded it of a mystical woman from a fairytale who stands under a pine tree thinking of her lover. Alas, I was completely wrong. Not about the poetry though, that is exactly what happens when you admire the composition of a work of art. But I was quite off about the woman, because the presumed mystical woman PININFARINA is in truth a company known for its very, very fast cars, originally located in Cambiano/Turin, and who recently expanded its headquarters to Munich. Although the term “known” is more suitable for car connoisseurs, fat bank account holders and Formula One professionals. Because even though AUTOMOBILI PININFARINA has been around for nearly 90 years, it’s only now emerging from the shadows to present itself to the masses. And there are two reasons for this. Firstly, AUTOMOBILI PININFARINA boss Michael Perschke and secondly Paolo Pininfarina, grandson of the founder Battista Farina. These two men thought it was high time to step out into the limelight; And electric mobility was a wonderful way for them to bring their plans to fruition.

HUH? IT LOOKS JUST LIKE A FERARRI
Yeah, and even I, who doesn’t know anything about cars, made the correct association: The company’s prototype looks just like a Ferrari. And thats because AUTOMOBILI PININFARINA used to be exclusively responsible for creating the character designs of many luxury car companies, including Ferrari. In fact, more than 60 different Ferrari models were created by them. Not to mention the mass production vehicles like the ‘Peugeot 504’ or the ‘Fiat 124.’ The Italian company itself has hardly ever sold anything. Until now. Because now they’re coming in with a bang. Because:
  1. they are building cars with electric motors and the first one, the PF0, has than 400 kmh to offer.
  2. they look like luxury cars. It doesn’t get any better than this; they even sport the classic Ferrari red.

And it is this exclusivity that the founders see as their advantage. Since the electric power business is not a mass market just yet, more specialised and smaller providers such as AUTOMOBILI PININFARINA have better opportunities. The new co-owner, an Indian group called ‘Mahindra Mahindra,’ also shares this belief. After all, you don’t put two million dollars per prototype into the PF0 simply for fun. The founders don’t see their vehicle as a car, but rather as a cult object and collector’s item, and that’s what it’s meant to be. Maybe that’s the reason why only 150 pieces were created and released into the world. So, that’s what’s planned for 2020 for the time being. But in the future we will be seeing more SUV’s and other sports cars from AUTOMOBILI PININFARINA.
400 KMH ON GERMAN MOTORWAYS
The brand, of course, stands for speed, speed, and more speed. In less than two seconds the PF0 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h quickly reaching it’s top speed of more than 400 km/h. The idea of that speed alone leaves me quite dizzy. But that’s not even all. Let’s talk about speed and throw some facts on the table: Under the carbon body of the PF0, 1,416 kW (1,900 PS) and a torque of 2,300 N provide phenomenal results. And all that it possible without a combustion engine; only a highly potent electric drive, or more precisely, with an electric motor for each individual wheel. AUTOMOBILI PININFARINA has stated the PF0 has a range of nearly 500 kilometres, something which would also be groundbreaking, as this is often an issue with electric cars: They don’t always make it all the way from A to B. Germany is still far from being sufficiently equipped for electric traffic, especially in the more rural areas.

FORMEL E, INSTEAD OF FORMEL 1
The company is receiving high-profile support from Nick Heidfeld, who has had the hance to enjoy the sleek, low car equipped with an integrated rear spoiler. He was probably also impressed by the spacious interior and with its two large touchscreens. The German racing driver has been active in motorsport for 20 years and has been a factory driver at Mahindra Racing in Formula E for three years. It’s possible that he was the first to drive the “babies” of AUTOMOBILI PININFARINA, and it’s possible that along the way he came across a pine grove and perhaps there was a woman there, standing under the trees waiting for her lover.
Curious about the Hypercar? Then come along! AUTOMOBILI PININFARINA is the exclusive exhibitor at our GREENTECH FESTIVAL from 23 to 25 May at Tempelhof Airport. More information here
