I crept quietly and secretly out of the busy operation of our office in Mitte, Berlin a little earlier today. I was scheduled to go on a fragrance journey with ‘Mrs. Toni’s Parfum’ at Checkpoint Charlie and was actually quite curious to see what would await me there. On the way I notice again how hectic and loud the capital can be at times, and how many different smells there are to encounter. Emotions, memories and even disgust can be roused. Our sense of smell, the olfactory perception, plays an enormously important role in our everyday life; one which we often tend to underestimate.

When I arrived at Mrs. Toni’s Parfum, it was a real relief to be allowed to enter the small but lovely oasis of calm at number 13 on Zimmerstraße. The gentle, barely perceptible scent of precious perfume rose directly into my nose and I took a deep, relaxing breath.
ON A FRAGRANCE JOURNEY TO MY PERSONALISED PERFUME
So what exactly was I supposed to do here? To sniff my way through the world of fragrances and create my very own individualised favourite fragrance. The premium ingredients are contained in classic pharmacy bottles which sit on the large counter in the middle of the room and await allowance to exude their fragrance. But before we really got going, Katharina Gutzer, in charge of press and communication, told me the history of the manufactory, which has been successfully running for 10 years now. It all began in the Berliner Philharmonie when founder Stefanie Hanssen noticed the enchanting scent of her seat neighbour at a concert, but was too shy to ask about the fragrance. The next day she sifted through the perfumeries of the capital city and described the fragrance from her memory as best she could. Without success. She was mainly offered the traditional, trendy fragrances for sale. And so the idea was born to open a manufactory in which people could have their personal fragrance tailored to their needs. As a tribute to Stefanie’s grandmother ToniLuise, an always beautifully dressed and now proud 90 year old lady, the company ‘Frau Tonis Parfum’ was founded in 2009.

Sensual: In the minimalistically designed manufactory, the 36 selected perfume bottles stand side by side in simple pharmacy flacons on a large counter. Nothing is meant to distract from the essential: the fragrance. Photos: Mrs. Tonis Parfum
ALWAYS FOLLOW YOUR NOSE
As I sniffed my way from bottle to bottle, I quickly found my first few favourite scents as well as a few that I disliked. For my taste it shouldn’t be too flowery, sweet or oriental. I prefer pure, slightly bitter, more masculine fragrances. Mrs. Toni’s perfume, however, is not divided into gender specific perfumes. Whether man or woman, we can combine all of the available aromas. It’s our gut feeling that helps with this part. In combination with our keen nose, we end up quickly knowing exactly what we want. I didn’t have to think for long either; I simply felt that this fragrance is the one that is supposed to accompany me in my everyday life.

VISITING US IS NOTHING LESS
THAN TAKING A POETIC WALK
THROUGH THE SENSUAL UNDERGROWTH
OF YOUR OWN PAST.

THE FRAGRANCE HAS CHARACTER
So what was the result of my personal fragrance journey? A cosy hotel room in my favourite city, Hamburg, in which a freshly washed white duvet lies on the soft bed while a pleasant, aromatic ocean breeze pours in through the open window. Maritime, elegant and cool, like the far north, and completely according to my own taste. If I take a wiff of my own perfume now, I’m mentally transported back to beautiful vacations in the Hanseatic city or up along the coast of the North Sea, strolling along the beach. My fragrance reflects my soul. Kinda crazy, right?
A SCIENCE UNTO ITSELF
During my fragrance journey I learned a lot, for example, that a perfume has a head, a heart and a base note. While we perceive the top note as soon as we spray it on and it tends to evaporates the fastest, the heart and base notes stay on our skin a little longer because they have a richer aroma. What I find most exciting is that each person’s perfume smells different. This is due, among other things, to the properties of our skin, our hormones and even the time of year plays a role in how we perceive fragrances. There’s so much more I could tell you about it, but I think the best way is to visit the scent experts in person. So go on, take an introductory wiff in the workshop of fragrances!
