There are certain things in life that are just simply great and totally convince everyone. For example, pandababies. There isn’t a single person who would claim the sunsets over the blue, turquoise beach to be unpleasant or even borderline torturous. Another example that rarely polarizes, is a HARLEY-DAVIDSON. Even without any personal reference, without a motorcycle licence and without the dream of wanting to cruise down Route 66 on a two-wheeler, this motorised legend still manages to captivate everyone and is considered a very attractive vehicle. The brand is regarded as an American industrial icon that has stood for freedom, rebellion and independence like no other motorcycle for more than 115 years. Its distinctive feature is definitely that sexy, deep blubbering and unmistakable rumbling when it comes round the corner. But this is exactly where the problem lies, considering that only a gasoline engine has this audible charm and that the vehicle, with its cult status, is racing over the asphalt at nature’s expense.

REVERSE, RETHINK, REARRANGE
But HARLEY-DAVIDSON wants to join the race into the green future, even if that means leaving the gasoline rumbling behind. For this reason, the company is looking into approaching electric mobility and now intends to launch several electrically powered bikes onto the market over the next few years. Within 2019, the US brand’s first electric motorbike, the ‘LiveWire’ should be on the road.
It weighs 200kg, yet still looks slim and sporty, and thanks to its heart, the three-phase AC motor with an output of 74 HP, it can go from 0 to 100 in three seconds.
The high-voltage battery offers 225 km range in city traffic or 142 km range in intercity stop and go and motorway traffic, depending on driving habits, weather conditions and features.
The batteries can be recharged at fast charging stations or simply and conveniently at home by plugging them in regular power sockets. Other impressive features include Bluetooth connectivity, navigation and music control through a display panel. A sophisticated Panasonic® telematics system allows the owner to establish a connection to his own bike, check the charging status of the battery or the location and receive safety warnings if, for instance, the bike is tampered with, moved or hit.
NOT CLASSIC, BUT CLASSY
No doubt, at first it’s easy to criticise HARLEY-DAVIDSON’s electric bike, seeing those two wheels without hearing that low rumble is like a Berliner donut without jam or a Berliner human without a tote bag; so basically unthinkable. But the ‘LiveWire’ isn’t completely silent, it just has a new sound, with pitch and volume increasing with increasing speed. Overall, it’s a good thing that the motorcycle manufacturer is now thinking green, seizing the opportunity to appeal to a younger and more environmentally conscious clientele and with this model, ushering in a new era for the quiet legend.
