THE HOTEL BILL
THAT MAKES YOU HAPPY

Jeremy Cowart has had everyone in front of his lens from Britney Spears and Taylor Swift to Sting and the Kardashians. As a successful star photographer he has travelled around the world and was a guest in countless hotels. But there was one thing he kept noticing; nowhere had he discovered a single hotel that in any way touched or inspired him. Cowart started to think that it was time to rethink the entire hotel concept.
Along his travels through various countries, Cowart had been given countless insights into the lives of the poorer social classes. In Cowart, an unease grew knowing of these worlds and their stark contrast to his own privileged position. From this feeling arose the question that would change his life from that moment on. What if he could give something back to the less privileged of the respective countries during his stays abroad? And what if it was actually quite easy, and could be done while sleeping?
The Purpose Hotel: Improving the world in your sleep
It hasn’t been built yet, but the first crowd funding campaign with Kickstarter was a complete success. For Jeremy Cowart’s vision of a hotel that can do a lot more than just provide a place to sleep, the total money raised has nearly reached $680,000. The first hotel is now to be built in Cowart’s hometown of Nashville, Tennessee and the first keys, an exclusive production by the brand The Giving Key, have already been made.

“Everything in the hotel
and all available services
are selected to support people.”

The concept is well thought out, down to the very last detail and everything in the hotel and all available services are selected to support people. One overnight stay gives a child access to education. All of the furniture and textiles are made by people on fair terms in developing countries. The costs for room service are used for projects against hunger; soap, shampoo and other body care products are produced by an association for women who have been able to free themselves from addiction, extreme poverty or violence.
W-LAN is available free of charge, but if it isn’t fast enough for you, you can pay a surcharge, and with it, support projects against human trafficking. A water pump in the lobby is there to symbolise the flow of hope, and those who drink from it support water supply projects. The list goes on. Everything at the Purpose Hotel or anything that is done there has a positive impact on many people’s lives, both locally and internationally.

A hotel bill that guarantees true happiness!
When guests receive their bills, they get to see exactly what their money is doing. The success of the hotel is measured by the positive impact on human lives, not by the US dollar earned. “It should be a statement that what unites us is stronger than the boundaries within which we are born,” says Cowart, “Humanity desperately needs it.”
Another special feature of the Purpose Hotel is the community concept, which is intended to make all hotel guests part of a larger movement. As soon as a guest has arrived and checked in, they automatically become a member of the community. The hotel offers interactive activities that inspire the imagination and inspire guests to work together to become strong. The hotel also functions as a creative meeting place, providing coworking spaces and workshops that will be used to work on solutions to social problems.
More than just a hotel: the birth of a global movement
Cowart hopes that his idea will really take off in the future and that other hotels all over the world will also rethink their concepts on a larger scale. The Purpose Hotel is planned as a chain, and so far, this unusual method of financing, which isn’t just achieved by large investors, but by many individuals who each contribute a small amount, works very well. But Cowart estimates the amount needed to actually build the first hotel to be 100 million US dollars and we’re still about 9.4 million short. Should he raise another two million dollars, Cowart plans to commission an architect, an engineer and a designer to create more concrete plans.
With an additional donation of $15, each Purpose Project supporter will also receive a selected hotel soundtrack. It contains a selection of songs by artists like Andy Davis, Dave Barnes, Hawk In Paris, Imogen Heap, Jill and Kate, Johnnyswim, Katie Herzig, Lauren Daigle, Leagues, Marc Scibilia, Matt Stanfield, Matt Wertz, NEEDTOBREATHE, Paramore, Phillip LaRue, Remedy Drive, Secret Nation, Sleeping At Last, The Daylights or Trent Dabbs.
Once your stay at the hotel is over, you can continue to make the world a better place by listening to music at home.
